Camp Goodwill Baby Hospital, photographed on July 14, 1913, is a summer health site for infants. Open-air hospitals and camps like this one appeared in American cities and rural areas in the early twentieth century, when diarrheal illness killed many babies during the hot months and doctors urged fresh air and clean milk. The image is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented national life, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes in the coating, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original emulsion.
