Soldiers training at Camp Travis, the Army cantonment near San Antonio, Texas, could borrow books through the Library War Service during the First World War. The American Library Association ran the program, setting up libraries and book collections in military camps across the country so that troops had something to read during the long months of training before they went overseas. The picture is one of many glass negatives the National Photo Company made in the 1910s, when it recorded American cities, institutions and public life. Its exact date is uncertain, but the record places it within that decade.
