Coney Island's beach is the subject here, and the record names it only in the title, so the scene is best read through the place itself. The Brooklyn peninsula on the Atlantic was by the early twentieth century a major seaside amusement destination, drawing crowds by rail and trolley to its sand, boardwalk and bathing facilities. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the photographic files of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers. Its date and maker are not recorded, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, so it is worth treating as a label rather than a confirmed fact.
