Manhattan Beach Hotel stood on the sandy strip just east of Coney Island, in Brooklyn, when the area was a fashionable seaside destination for New Yorkers. Austin Corbin, a railroad and real estate developer, built the resort in the late 1870s and linked it to the city by rail. The copyright notice credits A. Loeffler of Tompkinsville, N.Y., and the record dates the view to about 1904, though that date is unverified. The picture shows one of the grand summer hotels that drew crowds to the shore before amusement parks came to dominate the peninsula.
