Balmer's bathing beach was one of the privately run bathing grounds along the Coney Island shore in the years around 1900, when the Brooklyn resort drew large crowds from New York City on summer weekends. Bathhouses like this one provided dressing rooms and lockers, so visitors who had arrived by trolley or elevated train could change into swimwear and head to the sand and surf. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers made commercial views of American resorts, towns and scenery, and it preserves the beach crowds and bathhouse architecture of that period.
