The Helter Skelter at Luna Park was a tall tower with a spiral chute wound around its outside, one of the attractions that gave the park its reputation after Luna Park opened on Coney Island in 1903. Riders climbed to the top and slid down on mats or burlap sacks, a fast, bumpy descent that made the structure a popular draw. This glass plate negative was made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American places across the country. The large 8 by 10 inch format captures the tower's framework in fine detail.
