Shooting the chutes was a water slide in which a boat or flat-bottomed craft plunged down an incline and skimmed across a pond, throwing up a sheet of spray. This negative captures that ride at Dreamland, the Coney Island amusement park that opened in 1904 and was known for its electric lights and whimsical architecture. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this and thousands of other views of American scenery and attractions, was active in the early twentieth century, when Coney Island drew enormous crowds of day-trippers from New York City. Dreamland burned in 1911, so this glass plate records a park that was then at the height of its popularity.
