Dreamland, the electrically lit amusement park at Coney Island, is the subject here, caught at the hour when its towers and lamps would have begun to stand out against the fading sky. The park opened in 1904 under developer William H. Reynolds, who built it as a rival to the older attractions along the Brooklyn shore and promoted it as a fairyland of illumination. Around 1905, when this glass negative was made, the electric lighting was still a novelty that drew crowds after dark. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of resorts, cities and scenery across the country, produced many such commercial images, and this one preserves how the park looked in its first years, before a fire destroyed much of it in 1911.
