The Sea Beach Palace was one of the large seaside hotels and entertainment halls that gave Coney Island its reputation as a resort in the late 1800s. Its name signaled the ambitions of the period, when developers built grand structures to draw city dwellers out to the shore by rail and steamboat. Stereograph cards like this one were sold to visitors as keepsakes, so the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope and to bring the crowds and architecture of the resort into a parlor. Because the card is undated beyond a 1890 to 1930 range, it offers a useful view of how the island presented itself during those decades.
