Luna Park, which opened on Coney Island in 1903, was one of the most ambitious amusement parks in the country, and this view captures its illuminated towers and domes rising above the crowds. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for hand-colored and tinted views of American scenery and attractions, produced the image, which is why it reads more like a postcard-style showpiece than a candid snapshot. Coney Island's parks drew enormous summer crowds from New York City and beyond, and Luna Park's electric lighting and fanciful architecture made it a symbol of the resort's modern spectacle. The record notes that some details are unverified, so the exact date of the photograph is best read as approximate.
