Luna Park's entrance on Surf Avenue was the first thing crowds saw when they arrived at Coney Island, and this stereograph records it in the years just after the park opened in 1903. Its designers, Frederic Thompson and Elmer "Skip" Dundy, built the park around towers, domes, and a great many electric lights, which made it famous for its after-dark glow. The photographer, William H. Rau of Philadelphia, made many views of the resort. Seen through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merge into a single three-dimensional view of the gateway.
