Surf Avenue was the main street running past the amusement district on Coney Island's Brooklyn shore, lined with hotels, restaurants, and attractions that drew crowds from across New York City. The Bain News Service, whose founder George Grantham Bain built the collection now held by the Library of Congress, was a press photo agency active in New York in the early 1900s, supplying images to newspapers and magazines. Its glass negatives record the city's streets and public life during that period. The original caption data is marked as unverified, so the exact date of this view is uncertain.
