What sets this negative apart is its caption, "Hindus," attached to a Coney Island view. Bain News Service titles were often written quickly and were not always checked against the scene, so the label is best read as a lead rather than a confirmed identification. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, New York news photographs made in the early 1900s and into the 1910s and 1920s. Coney Island, the amusement district on the Brooklyn shore, drew large and varied crowds in those decades, and the record does not say whether the subject is a group of visitors, a performance, or something else.
