The lobby of the Westchester Apartments, rather than the building's exterior, is the focus of this view of a Washington, D.C., residence. Theodor Horydczak, a Latvian-born photographer who recorded the capital's architecture for decades, made the picture sometime between about 1920 and 1950, when apartment living was becoming a common way for city residents to settle in Washington. Lobbies from this period often used polished stone, decorative plasterwork and carefully chosen furnishings to signal comfort and respectability, so the image shows how such buildings presented themselves to tenants and visitors.
