The lobby of the Westchester Apartments presents a formal interior of the kind many Washington apartment buildings favored between the world wars, when large residential buildings used polished public rooms to make an impression on tenants and visitors. Theodor Horydczak, who spent decades photographing the city's buildings and streets, recorded the room with its furniture arranged for view, and the subject headings point to the furnishings as part of the story. The record dates the print only to a span of roughly thirty years, so the exact year is uncertain, but it falls within the 1920 to 1950 period that Horydczak's work covers.
