Rollie Zeider played infield for the Chicago White Sox, and this glass negative from about 1912 captures him as a working ballplayer of the early 1910s. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York and distributed to newspapers across the country. Bain's photographers often worked from caption cards that were written in haste, so names were sometimes misspelled; the original card here reads "Zieber," and the spelling was corrected later by baseball researchers. The glass plate format of the period gives the picture its sharp detail and makes it a useful record of how the Sox looked in that era.
