Nixey Callahan is pictured here as manager of Chicago's American League club, the team now known as the White Sox. A former pitcher and outfielder, he was in charge of the club in the early 1910s, when Chicago supported two major league teams. The Bain News Service, a newspaper photo agency, made most of these glass negatives for quick publication, so portraits like this one were meant to accompany baseball news. The date of about 1913 is a research estimate, and the caption's reference to the Cubs appears to be a mix-up.
