Two Chicago Cubs, shortstop Al Bridwell and catcher Jimmy Archer, are the subjects of this 1913 glass negative from the Bain News Service. Bridwell is best remembered for the single he hit in September 1908, which drove in the winning run for the New York Giants and set off the controversy over Fred Merkle's missed base. Archer, an Irish-born catcher, was a steady presence behind the plate for the Cubs in the early 1910s. The Bain agency sold news photographs to newspapers across the country, so portraits like this one document how working ballplayers were presented to the public in the years before radio and television.
