This Bain News Service glass negative shows William "Kid" Gleason of the Chicago White Sox, photographed at Hilltop Park in New York, the Highlanders' home ballpark in Upper Manhattan, where visiting clubs also played. Gleason was a small, scrappy infielder before he became one of the game's best-known field leaders, and he later managed the 1919 White Sox to the World Series. The picture's date of 1912 is an estimate drawn from research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so it is a useful marker of the period rather than a confirmed day. Bain's pictures of ballplayers are valued for capturing the everyday look of the sport in the early 1910s.
