Charles J. Watson is the player named in this glass negative, which the Bain News Service captioned simply with his initials and the Chicago Federal League. The Federal League was an upstart rival to the established major leagues, operating as a third major league in 1914 and 1915, so the photograph is useful as a record of a Chicago club and its players during that short-lived challenge. The date of 1912 is a research estimate by baseball historians, not a date written on the plate, so it is worth treating as approximate. Bain's large collection of news photographs from the early twentieth century is valued for capturing the faces and uniforms of ballplayers working in the years before team photography was routine.
