Two drivers, Ralph Beardsley and J.D. Coote, sit at the wheel of a Simplex on a race track, a pairing that sets this print apart from the many Bain Collection pictures of cars posed on roads and in showrooms. The Simplex was an American luxury touring and racing car built in the years before the First World War, when long-distance and track competition was a popular way for manufacturers to show their engineering to buyers. The caption card's subject tracings date the car to 1910, though the card itself records no date. George Grantham Bain was a news photographer and his collection holds many images of this kind, so the picture is a useful record of early motor racing as it was covered in the press.
