Titled for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, this view looks down the New River from Hinton, a railroad town in southern West Virginia where the river cuts through a deep gorge. The C&O built its line through that gorge in the 1870s, and the bridges and cuts it required were among the notable engineering works of the route. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of railroads and the scenery along them, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, when rail travel was the main way visitors reached such country.
