Sandstone Falls, where the New River drops over a broad ledge of rock, gives this view its setting, with Chesapeake and Ohio Railway tracks running along the riverbank beside it. The C&O followed the New River gorge through southern West Virginia, a route that required cutting and grading through steep rock walls and that carried coal and other freight out of the region. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format views of American towns, rivers, and railroads in the early twentieth century, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between about 1910 and 1920. The picture shows how the railroad and the river were forced to share one narrow valley.
