From the upper end of the Incline Railway, this view looks down over Duluth's rooftops toward the harbor, where the transporter bridge spans the ship canal in the distance. The incline, a cable-hauled car that carried riders up the steep hillside above the lake, was a practical necessity in a city built on such sharp slopes. The transporter bridge, completed in 1905, moved vehicles and foot passengers across the canal on a hanging car, reflecting the port's growth as Lake Superior shipping expanded. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and rail-era scenes for commercial sale in the early 1900s.
