Few things set this view apart like the incline railway that carried visitors up the dunes at Macatawa, on Michigan's Lake Michigan shore, to a lookout pavilion above the water. The photograph dates to the early 1900s, when lakeside resorts across the Great Lakes were drawing summer crowds by steamer and rail. Such inclines let day-trippers reach a high vantage point without a long climb, and the pavilion gave them a view of the lake and shoreline. Pictures like this one record how resort towns once shaped their landscapes for leisure.
