Five railway officials, Messrs. Swan, Cadell, Middleton, Howse, and Kellock, posed together at Balaklava, the Black Sea port the British used as their supply base in the Crimean War. In 1855 the army ran a rail line from the harbor up to the plateau above Sevastopol, hauling food, ammunition, and other supplies to the troops besieging the city. Roger Fenton made the photograph that year while documenting the war, and his salted paper prints are among the earliest large-scale photographic records of a conflict. The formal, grouped pose says as much about the men's standing as about the work they oversaw.
