A lone man at work on the line near Broken Hill, in Rhodesia, shows the railway that Cecil Rhodes planned to push north through the territory that bears his name. Rhodes envisioned a route from the Cape to Cairo, and track laid through what is now Zambia depended largely on African laborers working under European supervision, often in harsh conditions. Broken Hill took its name from the lead and zinc ore found there, and the town grew into a stop on the route and a mining center. The photograph, dated somewhere between 1890 and 1923, records the manual labor behind imperial ambitions that were rarely shown from the workers' side.
