A large old chestnut stands beside the tracks at Giornico, a village in Ticino's Leventina valley, where the St. Gotthard Railway runs across the valley floor. The line opened in 1882 and linked northern Europe with Italy through a tunnel beneath the pass, so trains passing this tree carried travelers and freight along one of the most demanding routes in the Alps. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, and this copy was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. in its Views of Switzerland catalog.
