Biaschina is a steep, narrow gorge in Ticino, where the Gotthard Railway drops toward the Italian-speaking south. The line opened in 1882 and was an engineering feat through the Alps, and this stretch needed tight curves and cuttings to manage the grade. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Photochrom Co. of Zurich that used multiple lithographic stones to hand-tint a photograph. Detroit Publishing Co. later sold these views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 Switzerland catalog.
