Few views of the Matterhorn pair it with a railway, but this one does, showing the Gornergrat line that climbs above Zermatt in the Valais Alps. The line opened in 1898, and the photochrom process used here gave the scene the soft, saturated color of a hand-tinted lantern slide. The print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog J of 1905, which sold Swiss scenes made by the Zurich firm Photoglob. Its railway and mountain subjects reflect the rise of mountain tourism in the 1890s.
