This photochrom shows the gorges of the Stalvedro near Airolo, the Ticino town at the southern approach to the St. Gotthard route, where the railway climbs steeply out of the valley. The line opened in 1882 and was one of the great engineering works of its day, and the rugged gorge here shows why its builders needed tunnels, bridges and tight curves. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Photoglob company in Zürich, which hand-colored each image from a black-and-white glass negative, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold them to American buyers as souvenirs of Swiss scenery.
