Few pictures in this collection show automobiles arriving by rail, and this glass negative from January 30, 1924, captures Ford vehicles sitting on a railway flatcar or siding. The Detroit Publishing Company, which had a wide commercial trade in scenic and industrial views, catalogued it under its own numbering, and the record notes that it was possibly made for the Ford Motor Company's automobile industry work. By the mid-1920s, Ford was shipping its Model T and Fordson tractors across the country by rail, so the scene reflects how a new consumer product moved from the factory to dealers and farms. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch dry plate, a format photographers relied on for careful detail.
