The cable incline on Mount Lowe, in the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena, was the steepest part of a route built to carry visitors from the valley floor to the Echo Mountain resort. Thaddeus Lowe, a balloonist who had used aerial reconnaissance during the Civil War, developed the line in the early 1890s, and the cars were hauled up the grade by cable. Detroit Photographic Co. issued views like this one for tourists, who came to see both the mountain scenery and the engineering that made it reachable. The image shows how the track was laid straight up the slope, which explains why the ride was as much a spectacle as a means of travel.
