A tunnel mouth and a bridge on the North-Western Railway near Quetta make this slide's subject, a rail line that climbed through rugged hills on the frontier of British India. William Henry Jackson, the American photographer, made the slide during his around-the-world railway survey for the World's Transportation Commission in 1894 and 1895. Quetta's rail link through the Bolan Pass was a major engineering project of the 1880s, and the hand coloring adds color to a scene of stone, iron, and steep terrain.
