The rock palisades here rise sheer from the water's edge, with the railway line running along a narrow shelf between the cliffs and the river. Scenes like this were a favorite subject of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century photographers, who were drawn to the way a rail corridor could be squeezed into a gorge. Railroad builders often had to blast or cut through such rock, so the track itself records a significant feat of engineering. Look for how the tracks bend with the riverbank and how the cliff face dwarfs the trains and the people who worked the line.
