Shown in a studio portrait by the Washington firm Harris & Ewing, John Henry Wigmore is identified on the caption card with the rank of major, a title that stands apart from his better-known career as a legal scholar. Wigmore led the law school at Northwestern University in Chicago and wrote the multivolume *Treatise on the System of Evidence*, which became a standard reference for American courts. The picture comes from the Pan American Union collection, reflecting the hemispheric exchange of the period, when Wigmore took an interest in the legal systems of Latin America. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting is best placed within the years the Washington studio was active.
