John Thomas Scopes, the Tennessee high school teacher whose 1925 trial over the teaching of evolution drew national attention, is the subject of this June 1925 portrait. The Scopes Trial, held in Dayton, Tennessee, pitted the state's ban on teaching human evolution against the American Civil Liberties Union, which had offered to defend any teacher willing to challenge the law. Scopes was convicted and fined, though the verdict was later overturned on a technicality, and the case became a lasting symbol of the clash between science and religious belief in American public life.
