A Texas Democrat who would later serve as vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Nance Garner was already a familiar figure in Washington when this portrait was made in 1924. He had represented a South Texas district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1903. The print is by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for its large output of portraits and press photographs of public figures. The record's caption details have not been independently verified, so the exact occasion for the sitting is not documented here.
