Few portraits on this board carry a story as dramatic as John Boyle O'Reilly's. The Irish-born writer and nationalist was convicted of treason by the British in 1866, transported to a penal colony in Western Australia, and escaped by rowing out to an American whaler in 1869. He settled in Boston, where he became a poet and editor of the Catholic weekly *The Pilot*, and he remained a prominent voice for Irish causes and for the rights of his fellow exiles. This photoprint was made by the Boston firm of McCormick, and the caption card does not record a date, so the sitting itself is unconfirmed.
