Thomas Cavendish, the English navigator and privateer, is the subject of this engraving, which is credited to an engraver named Gimber. Cavendish sailed around the world between 1586 and 1588, one of the first Englishmen to complete the voyage, and he returned with Spanish treasure taken from raided ships. He died at sea in 1592 while attempting a second circumnavigation. The record does not give a date for the print, so its origin is uncertain, but portraits like this were often made later to honor explorers of the Elizabethan era.
