The Cambridge philosopher Henry More, a fellow of Christ's College, appears here as one of the Cambridge Platonists, a group who defended reason and the immaterial soul against materialist ideas. David Loggan drew the likeness in 1679, and A. Weger engraved it in Leipzig. Loggan, who worked in England and is known for his views of Oxford and Cambridge, made the print from a drawing rather than working directly from the sitter, so it reflects the conventions of late seventeenth-century portrait engraving. The transfer of an English portrait to a German workshop suggests how widely such images of scholars circulated.
