Major John André (1750–1780) was a British army officer whose capture in 1780 during the American Revolution made him one of the war's most famous prisoners. He had served as an intermediary in the secret dealings between Benedict Arnold and British headquarters, and when he was caught behind American lines carrying papers hidden in his stockings, the plot unraveled. Tried as a spy, he was hanged at Tappan, New York, in October 1780, and his fate drew sympathy on both sides of the Atlantic. This engraving, held in the Briggs Collection, is undated on its caption card, so its exact age is uncertain, but portraits of André circulated widely in the decades after his death.
