Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the elder daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, is the sitter here, and her turn-of-the-century portrait was made by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of the period. Alice became a celebrity while her father was in the White House, known for her outspoken manner and fashionable style, and she was often photographed by Johnston during those years. The record gives only a date range, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain, but the portrait reflects the period when the Roosevelt family drew intense public attention.
