Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a celebrated figure of the early twentieth century, and this 1902 portrait captures her during the years when the White House press and public followed her every move. Photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women working in the field at the time, made a body of portraits of the Roosevelt family, and her studio work from this period is known for its polished, carefully posed style. Alice was then in her late teens, and her public image as a lively, outspoken young woman in Washington was already drawing wide attention.
