Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, is the figure at the center of this portrait, and her public image was one of the most closely watched in Washington for decades. Born in 1884 to Theodore Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, she became known for her wit, her outspoken remarks, and her habit of appearing in the newspapers as much as her famous father did. Her marriage in 1906 to Nicholas Longworth, later Speaker of the House, made her a fixture of political life in the capital. The record gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a portrait of a woman who was a national personality across much of the twentieth century.
