Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, appears here in a presentation display of ten photographs taken roughly between 1890 and 1910, a period when she was growing from a girl into a public figure in her own right. The set comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, and Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of the era, was a frequent portraitist of the Roosevelt family during Theodore Roosevelt's time in the White House. Johnston's sittings helped shape how the family was seen by the public, with Alice often pictured as lively, fashionable and quick to attract press attention.
