Lake Vyrnwy, in the hills of mid-Wales, is a reservoir created to supply water to the city of Liverpool, and the hotel beside it was built to serve the visitors drawn to the new lake. This print shows the lake and hotel as they appeared between about 1890 and 1900, rendered in photochrom, a costly process that transferred photographs to color lithographic stones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers as travel pictures, and this one is a useful record of a landscape reshaped by modern engineering, with the hotel marking the tourism that followed.
