The Llewellyn Hotel stands in Beddgelert, a village in the Snowdonia region of north Wales, and the hotel's name shares its spelling with Llywelyn, the prince at the center of the village's best-known legend about a loyal hound named Gelert. This picture comes from the Photochrom process, a early color method in which photographs were transferred to stone or metal plates and printed in several colors, giving the scene a painted look. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American and British travelers in the 1890s and 1900s, and this print's catalog number places it in that trade.
