The South Wales Hotel stands in New Milford, the name the port town on Wales's Pembrokeshire coast was commonly known by in the late nineteenth century, when the Milford Haven waterway was a busy base for shipping and the fishing trade. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that printed color from multiple stone or metal plates, and they were sold to tourists who wanted colorful views of places they had visited or hoped to see. The picture's interest lies as much in its record of a working waterfront hotel as in the building itself, with the color rendering offering a glimpse of how a town like this presented itself to visitors.
