Portsmouth's harbor and waterfront are the subject here, shown in a sweeping panoramic view that takes in the town's shipping and rooftops as they looked when lithographic city views were at their most popular. Portsmouth was one of New England's leading seaports from the colonial era through the 1800s, and its position on the Piscataqua River made it a center for shipbuilding and trade. Views like this one were often drawn from a high vantage point and printed in quantity, so they offer a useful record of how the working waterfront was laid out. Look closely at the masts and wharves, which show how much of the town's life depended on the water.
